If you didn’t feel like getting out of bed this morning, neither did the egg on your plate of keema curry at Curry House. At the center of this dish you’ll find a mellow egg yolk that sports the face of Gudetama, one of the latest character crazes from Sanrio of Hello Kitty fame.
Gudetama’s mopey expression matches his reputation as a despondent egg who wants to crawl back into his shell or hide under a blanket of bacon. Not since Garfield have so many people fallen in love with an animated slouch. Gudetama’s nuanced depression strikes a chord with anyone who has ever felt dreary or unmotivated. And he’s terribly cute.
The Sanrio team-up brought Gudetama to all Curry House locations in the form of a multi-course meal ($29) for a limited time. The set features three items masked with Gudetama’s iconic open mouth and sleepy eyes: keema curry (minced beef) with a sunny-side-up egg, corn soup, and custard pudding. The meal also includes a drink, salad, souvenir paper placemat, and a limited edition black beanie cap.
You can find Curry House across Southern California in West LA, Little Tokyo, Torrance, Cypress, Gardena, Irvine, Puente Hills, and Monterey Park. While you can still catch the Gudetama meal through Jan. 20, only a limited number are available each day due to its popularity.
For more Sanrio-inspired eats, head to Hacienda Heights where the characters are taking over Energy Bistro & Karaoke. Hello Kitty and her friends—including Gudetama—emblazon the walls of character-themed karaoke rooms, while their faces also adorn the restaurant’s burgers, hot dogs, cheesy tater tots, and waffles.
